Reptile Healthcare FAQ's

How often should I take my reptile to the vet?

We recommend taking your reptile to a vet specialising in reptiles at least once a year for a routine check-up. Regular veterinary visits can help identify any health issues early on and ensure your reptile receives appropriate care.

What signs indicate that my reptile is sick or in distress?

Signs of illness or distress in reptiles are different for every species, but common indicators include loss of appetite, weight loss, lethargy, abnormal behaviour, changes in skin colour or texture, respiratory difficulties, swelling, discharge from the eyes or nose, and changes in bowel movements. Any noticeable changes in your reptile's behaviour or appearance should be taken seriously and checked over by a vet.

How do I provide proper nutrition for my reptile?

Every reptile species has different but specific dietary requirements, so it's crucial to research and provide a nutritionally balanced diet appropriate for your reptile. This may include a combination of commercially available reptile food, live or frozen prey, fresh vegetables, and fruits. Speak with a vet or your reptile's breeder to ensure you are providing the correct diet and know your reptile's nutritional needs are being met.

How important is maintaining the correct temperature and humidity for my reptile?

Temperature and humidity play a crucial role in the overall health and well-being of reptiles. Different reptile species have different temperature and humidity requirements, so it's important to research and provide the right conditions for your specific reptile. Not proving the correct temperature or humidity levels can lead to stress, respiratory issues, digestion problems, and other health complications. Always do research on the species you intend to keep, and stick to their strict personal requirements.

What products are available to promote reptile health?

We stock a large range of products to benefit your reptile's health. Depending on the species of reptile you keep, will depend on which product is right for you. Shedding sprays can be purchased to aid in the shedding of your reptile, multivitamins are available which can be either applied directly onto your reptile's skin or some which can be added to their food. There are also reptile safe enclosure disinfectants to keep their enclosures sanitary. We recommend using F10, a veterinary grade disinfectant safe for all animals. Products such as probiotics, liquid or powdered calcium, and mite spray are also available.

How often should I clean my reptile's enclosure?

Regular cleaning of your reptile's enclosure is essential for maintaining good hygiene and preventing the growth of bacteria or parasites. We recommend doing a thorough, full enclosure clean using an animal safe disinfectant such as F10, weekly. Clean and sanitise all decorations, surfaces and food and water bowls. Ensure however that you do spot cleans throughout the week to clean any new animal waste. This reduces bacterial growth if the waste is left all week before you do a full clean.

Can reptiles carry diseases that can be transmitted to humans?

Some reptiles, such as turtles and certain lizards, can carry bacteria like Salmonella, which can be transmitted to humans. It's important to practice good hygiene, including washing hands thoroughly after handling reptiles or their habitat, to minimise the risk of disease transmission. Always use a veterinary grade disinfectant and clean your reptile's enclosure weekly, while also providing spot cleans throughout the week as necessary. Avoid contact between reptiles and individuals at higher risk, such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Are there any common health problems that reptiles experience?

Reptiles can be prone to various health issues, including respiratory infections, metabolic bone disease, parasites (internal and external), nutritional deficiencies, shell problems (in turtles), and reproductive disorders. Regular veterinary check-ups, proper husbandry, and a balanced diet can help prevent these health problems and treat them.

How can I provide environmental enrichment for my reptile?

Environmental enrichment is so important for the mental and physical well-being of reptiles. Offer a variety of hiding spots, climbing opportunities, and objects for exploration within the enclosure. Providing appropriate social interaction and mental stimulation, such as puzzle feeders or novel objects, can also enhance their overall enrichment. We stock a great range of insect feeders for lizards to boost their enrichment and make food time fun!
