Reptile Basking Light FAQ's

What is a reptile basking light?

A reptile basking light is a specific type of light bulb designed to provide a focused and intense heat source for reptiles. It is used to create a basking spot inside the reptile's enclosure, mimicking the warm sunlight that reptiles require for thermoregulation.

Why do reptiles need a basking light?

Reptiles are cold-blooded animals, meaning they rely on external heat sources to regulate their body temperature. Basking lamps provide a concentrated heat source that allows reptiles to raise their body temperature, aiding in digestion, metabolism, and overall well-being. Reptiles such as Bearded Dragons are often seen in their natural habitat sunning themselves, this is why we mimic this in captivity by providing them with a basking lamp.

How do I determine the wattage of the basking bulb?

The wattage of the basking lamp depends on the size of the enclosure, the distance between the lamp and the basking spot, the species of reptile, and the temperature gradient needed. It's important to research the specific requirements of your reptile species and consult a reptile expert or vet for advice on the appropriate wattage. We also strongly recommend using a thermostat in conjunction with any heat source you have for your reptile. This ensures the heat source does not overheat, and stays at the temperature you have set.

Where should I position the basking lamp in the terrarium?

The basking lamp should be positioned at one end of the enclosure to create a basking spot with a higher temperature. This allows the reptile to thermoregulate by moving between the warm basking spot and cooler areas as needed. Ensure that the reptile can't come into direct contact with the hot lamp or get too close to avoid burns, and always connect the bulb to a thermostat to avoid overheating the enclosure.

How long should I keep the reptile basking lamp on?

This can be species specific, however as a general rule of thumb we recommend providing your reptile with a 12-hour light and heat cycle, to mimic their natural environment and light cycle, ensuring they also always have a period of time without light.

Do all reptiles need a basking light?

Not all reptiles require a basking lamp, as their heating requirements vary depending on their natural habitat, species and behaviour. However, many reptiles, particularly diurnal (day-active) species, benefit from having a basking lamp to meet their thermoregulation needs. Research the specific heating requirements of your reptile species to determine if a basking lamp is necessary.
